Published : April 24, 2020

Let's admit it! No one wants pests at home be it harmless insects, creepy critters, or disease-carrying rodents. If you have found signs of pest infestation in your home, you need to take suitable action to prevent the problem escalating.

With every pest infestation comes the task of cleaning up after the mess. This could include the dead remains of the pests or the excrement and residue spread across your home. Besides looking gross, the droppings and pest residue spread harmful diseases to you and your people. The pest residue and droppings can also attract more pests into your home.

Pest infestation cleanup is easier said than done. For instance, rodents tend to crawl up the walls or hide in the cracks. When they die, it can be challenging to find the corpses, failing which rotting stench will be all-pervasive in your home.

Here are a few pointers that guide you on how to clean your home post a pest infestation.

Pest Infestation Cleanup Tips

How To Clean Up After A Rat Or Mouse Infestation?

Rodents carry infectious viruses. Therefore, it is imperative to exercise caution when cleaning rodent droppings and nests.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests avoiding sweeping, vacuum cleaning, and humidifying the rodent droppings. Instead, it recommends wearing rubber, vinyl, or latex gloves to handle mouse or rat urine and droppings.

Spray or apply disinfectant or a mixture of water and bleach onto rodent droppings. Allow the treatment to work on the droppings before cleaning them using paper towels. If you are dealing with a dead rodent, spray disinfectant and soak the corpse in a plastic bag. Ensure to seal it before disposing of the bag in a trash bin away from your home.

After cleaning all the physical debris, mix bleach & hot water, and disinfect the surfaces which were exposed to rodent droppings or where the rodents may have come into contact. For items like books, documents, etc. that cannot be disinfected using the liquid, store the items in a disinfested area for a week, or simply under the sun for a day.

How To Clean Up After A Raccoon Residue?

Cleaning up a raccoon residue works similar to dealing with a rodent infestation. You need to take immense caution and care when disposing of raccoon residue. The CDC recommends handling raccoon feces with proper safety gear. This is because raccoon feces carry Baylisascaris procyonis, a dangerous type of roundworm that infects and harms people. Baylisascaris procyonis is very hard to get rid of and requires months of treatment.

First, mist the target area with some hot soapy water, and then manually remove raccoon feces using an inverted plastic bag.

Next, wipe the area using a damp sponge and soap. After wiping, rinse the sponge to clean residue or feces remains to avoid infecting other areas of your home.

Drain the dirty water. This dispels the last remnants of raccoon excrement in your home. In the end, disinfect the bucket with hot or boiling water.

How To Clean Up After An Insect Infestation?

Insect droppings are easier and quicker to clean. For instance, droppings of giant insects like German cockroaches can be vacuumed. The process of cleaning up droppings of other insects is similar to that of German cockroaches, i.e., vacuum cleaning or brooming. After vacuum cleaning or brooming, disinfect the surfaces the insects were on.

Cleaning home after insect infestation accomplishes two things: first, it removes the residual germs and bacteria. Second, it eliminates pheromone and scents that attract other insects.
